“The Keene State College Music Department announces the winner of its 2020 International Call for Scores!
Congratulations to Michael Grebla for his piece, “A Curious Misadventure,” for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello. We will present the work, and discuss it with the composer himself, during a livestream lecture-recital on Saturday, February 6 at 7:30pm. In the Music Department here at KSC, we strive to support the creation and dissemination of newly composed works, and to provide models to our students for how such a commitment can play out. Students take part in the adjudication process, they have the opportunity to work with the winning composer, and they even help design the lecture recital itself. This educational process helps our students to discover and advance their own compositional voices and to find connection with the world of composition as it exists in the present day.
Michael Grebla, an international award-winning emerging composer from Western Australia and based in New York City, writes music described by Cut-Common Magazine as “a testament to the universal strength and endurance of the human spirit.” With a deep conviction for the role music plays as a unifying mechanism in society, constructing identity and building community, he endeavours to create meaningful and inclusive cultural experiences, bridging tradition and the present through his music. In recent years his works have dealt with ideas of journey, displacement, transience, and spirituality, offering his own deeply introspective expression and examination of the human experience.
